Lilies War posted 5/6/22 Smithville, MO June 17-2 Lilies War posted 5/6/22
Smithville, MO June 17-26
Many of the SCA members in Iowa are getting excited for Lilies war. Lilies is a 10 day event held just north of Kansas City. It is one of the largest events of the year in the area and has many unique features.
There are classes on a wide variety of topics every day of the event, including the lampworking tent that features our artisans from Iowa. The classes feature information for all different knowledge and skill levels and there is always something new to learn.
There are a number of Archery and Thrown Weapons activities every day of the war, including assistance for beginners. Fighting at the war includes rattan combat and steel combat.
There are youth and teen activities all week of the war.
There are also many other opportunities to learn at the informal social gatherings that happen through the war.
Lilies can be a challenge to attend if you are new to the SCA but it is also an easy drive into town for supplies and a great vacation on the lake. If you are new and want to talk about what it takes to be ready to attend an event like Lilies, just ask one of your local members or ask us on here.
More information can be found at the lilies website http://lilieswar.org/

Learning and Growing Over Time There are very few Learning and Growing Over Time
There are very few members of the SCA who are professionals in the fields of archaeology or collegiate history education. Most of us are enjoying this hobby for fun and are coming to it from many other diverse backgrounds. And we don’t all know everything about history - no one expects us to and the process of learning and trying is why we are here.
Make sure to allow yourself and others the time to learn and grow. We don’t expect you to know it all, we just expect you to be open to learning and growing. No one should be mad if there are gaps in your knowledge or if you have any of the commonly held misconceptions - because - they are commonly held.
If you come across someone else who has a gap in their knowledge or has a misunderstanding, please remember that they are not professionals either and respect their chance to learn and grow as well.

What to Expect at Queens Prize ready for 2022 Quee What to Expect at Queens Prize ready for 2022
Queen’s Prize Tournament is an annual event held in Calontir. The basis for the event is to encourage members to try their hand at making things. It is a great event to get feedback about your projects or to show off what you can do.
At Queen’s Prize (often shortened to QPT) entrants are “sponsored” in the tournament by someone who has received recognition in the arts and sciences. Sponsors are people who can help you put your project together and guide you through the ins and outs of the event.
One of the key points is that it is great to attend the event to look at all the participants’ entries even if you do not enter something yourself. If you are really new to the SCA or if you just haven’t found something you would like to work on, you can go just to learn about what others are learning about. Also, if entering competitions (or things that look a lot like competitions) isn’t your cup of tea - you don’t have to. You can just go and enjoy seeing what others do.

New, New-new and Sorta New Not all ‘new’ peop New, New-new and Sorta New
Not all ‘new’ people are the same level of ‘new.’
Some of the ‘new’ people we interact with are actually just checking out the SCA to see if this hobby works well for them. If you are at this level of new you are exploring the different ways people participate as well as the different activities you can participate in. So you probably don’t want to dive deeply into specific topics or research and might not need to focus on the jargon we use or some of the details of how we explore the various aspects of the game we love.
Some ‘new’ people are just beginning to participate in person and they are exploring when and where they can participate as well as trying various crafts and activities. If you are at this level of new then you still might not be diving deeply in the research on specific topics or joining in on tournaments or competitions. You are more than welcome to watch from the sidelines, checking things out without. You can join in when you are ready.
Some ‘new’ people are people who have been participating with us for some time but who either still consider themselves to be new or are considered by some experienced SCA members to be new. By this point you are likely having fun participating in the activities you enjoy and are having fun learning about history hands on. You are probably jumping right into the activities and competitions.
I am not sure when a ‘new’ member of the SCA just becomes a member of the SCA, but my guess is attending a few events and finding a project or two to work on puts someone well on their way
However if you feel you are still a bit too new to join in an archery shoot, a fight, an A&S competition or a sing along, that's ok. You have time. Join in when you are ready. Yes you are missing out on some of the fun, but it is also ok to wait until you are ready to move onto the next level of ‘new’ too.

Tournament of Valor May 27-30th, Near Wichita KS Tournament of Valor
May 27-30th, Near Wichita KS
Valor is one of the longest running events held in the Kingdom of Calontir. It is also held in Wichita KS, so not many SCA members from Iowa go to this event often. It features heavy fighting, Cut and Thrust fighting, equestrian activities, thrown weapons and archery and Arts and Science classes.
This is a multiple day event with camping, where people arrive on friday evening or saturday morning, watch the tournament, attend afternoon court and socialize. People will leave either on saturday as activities die down or on Sunday or Monday with the long holiday weekend. Sometimes there are classes and other activities and there are always interesting people to talk to during the day.
The site fee is $25 with a $5 member discount. The site location is 9601 W. 73rd St N. Valley Center, KS 67147. The site has camping space as well and indoor and outdoor areas.

Discover how different members participate in the Discover how different members participate in the SCA -
We meet a lot of great people at our local meetings of the Society for Creative Anachronism or even at events, on battlefield, on the archery range or in our arts and science classes. But it's really important to make sure that you get out at the events or meetings and talk to a variety of people who participate in the SCA. We feel the key reason to this is related to one of my most used phrases phrases; there's more than one way to play in the SCA.
If only ever do is talk to the same people we first meet when we come to an SCA meeting or only talk to the people that we meet when we are checking out the first area of interest that we find in the SCA then we will never discover the wide variety of different activities that are available within our hobby.
One of the most distinguishing features of the SCA is that there are so many different activities to participate in and you should give yourself the opportunity to discover if some of these other activities interest you as well. How do you know you don’t like archery or pottery unless you give it a try someday? We don't want you to get overwhelmed but it is good to explore some of your options before you settle in to focusing on a specific activity.
Even beyond this, it is worth exploring some of the different ways that people participate in the SCA. Different members participate to different degrees with some showing up more frequently than others, with some dedicating more of their time and energy to service than others, with some dedicating more of their time and energy to research than others. With some diving more deeply into the history or persona development. There are many ways to play in the SCA.
By getting out and talking to people who participate in different activities or who participate in different ways than you can discover more of the options that are open for how you will participate and what you will do. That can lead to you discovering the best balance of fun in your game.
