Tent Talk: Choosing the Right Tent for You Not ev Tent Talk: Choosing the Right Tent for You
Not every SCA event is a camping event, and not everyone who participates with SCA events camps. Some people avoid camping at events because of health or comfort reasons. Some people choose to camp to save the expense associated with hotels or the risks stemming from late night drives home after a fun day at the event.
Most new members start with modern tents. But modern nylon tents are very uncomfortable in hot weather. They are also prone to damage from high winds and often don’t stand up well to much use.
On the other hand, modern tents are fairly inexpensive, they pack up much smaller than canvas tents and are less prone to mildew.
Canvas tents are much more expensive, ranging from $500 to thousands of dollars depending on the size and style. They don’t pack anywhere near as small as modern tents, and often have piles of poles as well as ropes and stakes. They must be dried out after events as well as stored dry to prevent rot.
However they are cooler in hot weather, warmer in cool weather, are safer to use with heaters, and much more stable in bad weather. Canvas tents can be repaired if they suffer minor damage and if they are stored properly between events a canvas tent can’t last you 10 years or more. I use one that is about 20 years old. The fact that a canvas tent lasts many times longer than many modern tents makes them a much better investment in the long run and can bring the total cost of ownership down to less than a series of modern tents.
Before you invest in a tent, check out what other people are camping in at events. Most people are willing to show you their tents and talk about the good and bad aspects of various designs.

Bridgeton, MO Feb, 25th
Chieftains, also called the Tournament of Chieftains, is a yearly event held in or near St Louis, MO. The event is mostly a fighting event but it also has some classes and arts and science competitions as well at other activities. The site fee is $25 for non-members and $20 for members. Youth under 18 are free. Site opens at 9 am and closes at 7 PM
This is a single day event. In general people arrive in the morning, Watch the fighting or participate in other activities, take a class or socialize and generally hang out and have fun. There isn’t a feast, but they will provide food and snacks included in the cost of your entry fee from 11am on through the day. Most people leave the site in the late afternoon or early evening.
Although this is a long drive for many of our SCA members in Iowa, it is a nice distance for many of our friends in the southeast corner of the state. And for those from Iowa who make a weekend of it there is no end to good restaurants and other diversions to choose from in the St Louis area following the event.

Winter War Maneuvers February 18th 2023, Wichita Winter War Maneuvers

February 18th 2023, Wichita KS
Winter War Maneuvers is held each year to provide fighters a chance to practice large group fighting during the cold months of winter. The large indoor site means that no matter how chilly the weather is outside the fighters can have their fun inside.
This year's Winter War Maneuvers is going to be held in Wichita Kansas, which means that only the very dedicated fighters from Iowa will likely be making the long drive down to the southern part of the Kingdom. These events are mainly focused on marshal activities. Some non-fighters might bring projects along or just sit and spectate, but this is not the main focus of the day.
This is a single day event where people arrive in the morning, fight during the day and then leave site in the late afternoon. Outside food is not allowed, but there are modern vendors on site where you can buy burgers, hotdogs and the like.
YMCA - Farha Sports Center, Indoor Fields
3405 S. Meridian Ave, Building 300, Wichita KS 67217

Checking Your Inventory This is familiar to many Checking Your Inventory
This is familiar to many of us. We have just started a new game and we open up that empty inventory. There are all those spaces that we are going to fill with things that we find along the way.
That's a lot like starting out with participating in the Society for Creative and Anachronism. So many people begin participating with the SCA with an empty inventory. That is normal. They join the SCA and they make or borrow some basic historic clothing and that's the first item in their inventory.
Over time they learn how to make things, they learn where they can affordably buy things, they acquire the stuff they need along the way as they are participating. Not before they begin to participate.
Finding and making all of those things is a key part of the fun of learning about history and having your historic adventure and it lets you get started right away.
If you would like to learn more about how to fill up your inventory with things from history, ask your local SCA group members.

Upcoming Wars – posted 1/6/23 War of the Phoenix Upcoming Wars – posted 1/6/23
War of the Phoenix - Phoenix Arizona - February 1-5h 2023
Gulf Wars - Lumberton Mississippi - March 11th - 19th 2023
If you are on SCA social media you might see some members of the SCA beginning to talk about some upcoming Wars.
War of the Phoenix is a restart of a traditional winter war in Arizona. Gulf Wars is a foreign war held outside Lumberton Mississippi every year.
As much fun as these events are, they can be a challenge for newer members of the SCA to participate with. Not only are they a Very long drive, but the weather can be challenging and it can be fairly hard to have a week's worth of historic clothing to cover any weather conditions you might face.
It is possible for newer members to participate in foreign wars, but they are often better off to attend local events first and look to attend the wars when they roll around next year or wait for Lilies War in June. .
More information about War of the Phoenix can be found at: https://www.atenveldt.org/phoenix/
More information about Gulf Wars can be found at http://www.gulfwars.org/
If you are interested in attending a foreign war or any event, then talk to one of your local SCA members. They can help set you up with a list of items you need to work on and help you to establish a realistic timeline so that you can get to the events you want to but also keep the fun in your hobby.
Clothiers Seminar - Independence, MO January 28t Clothiers Seminar -
Independence, MO January 28th, 2023
Clothiers Seminar is a symposium with classes running all day covering various topics of clothing and costuming. These classes can cover all ranges of skills, cultures and time periods. Some of the classes may be lecture based others could be hands-on projects. Most of the classes have no fee to attend beyond the site fee (about $15 for non-members)
Other activities include:
Walk Through History – A Calontir Fashion Show
Merchants - a small number of merchants with various wares for sale.
There is a lunch inn where a simple meal can be purchased so people do not have to leave the site for lunch.
This is a single day event where people arrive in the morning, take classes, look at the displays and talk to people during the day. In the afternoon there will be a court where announcements will be made and other awards and recognitions will be presented. People leave the site in the late afternoon.
Some people from the Iowa SCA groups make a weekend of it and stay in the Kansas City area where they attend the event on Saturday and do a little shopping on Sunday before driving home. Others from the central to southern regions of Iowa may choose to make a (very) long day of it and day trip.

Winter’s Warm SCA Projects Winter is a great tim Winter’s Warm SCA Projects
Winter is a great time to work on projects to improve your experience in the Society for Creative Anachronism. Weeks like this remind us that it's always good to have some additional warm clothing and accessories for events
One pattern that I have noticed over the years is that many newcomers to the SCA like having cloaks for events to help stay warm. These are often very easy sewing projects with a couple of seams each and simple patterns.
As much as cloaks add to the fantasy element of the SCA, I always prefer a nice coat. There are a number of coat styles that are easy to construct and far more efficient in the use of materials than a cloak.
Hoods are one of those accessories that often make an outfit, and they were also used in many cultures for much of our time period. They are also easy to construct and are great at helping keep you warm
There are many styles of hats that can be sewn from scraps of wool and they can also add to your warm layers at events.
Leg white wraps or winingas are normally woven, but even cheater versions made with strips of cloth work and can look good. Having an extra layer of fabric around the bottom part of your legs can really add to your warmth if you're outer layers stop higher up your legs
Gloves are a more challenging thing to sew due to fitting the material around the fingers, but there are many examples of mittens from various cultures including some that were sewn out of scraps of material.
Whether you are making some warm clothing items for yourself or to share with friends, many of these small quick projects make great ways to spend a cold winter evening.
Northshield 12th Night 2023 Saturday January 14th Northshield 12th Night 2023
Saturday January 14th, 2022, Barony of Nordskogen (Ramsey MN)
There is a Twelfth Night event that is an easy drive for many SCA members in Iowa to attend as it is on the northside of Minneapolis. The one held in Northshield. Several of us have attended this event over the last few years anc can attest it is a good time and worth a day trip or more.
It is a one day event, (the Friday times listed are for the site setup crew) where people show up in the morning starting at 9am and leave in the late afternoon/early evening. There is a limited lunch planned, but people are also welcome to bring their own food or partake of one of the many restaurants in the area for lunch. (as for us, we often take some light snacks for a snacky lunch followed by a nice dinner out)
The event itself has a lot of fighting held in a large gymnasium that features ratan fighting, cut and thrust and rapier as well as youth combat.
There are usually a good number of merchants who attend with a variety of goods for sale and there are also opportunities for other youth activities and heraldic consultation.
One of the draws for many of us in the past has been bundling the attendance of this event with some shopping in Minneapolis, including SR Harris (a large fabric store that is an adventure in itself) and many other useful stops. There is a wide variety of wonderful restaurants to choose from for an evening meal and an easy drive back in the evening - or stay and extend your Minneapolis adventure by another day.
It is important to remember that this is a Northshield event with different customs and rules from our Calontir events in Iowa. The fee is $20 for adults and $15 for adult members

Winter is a Good Time to Go Medieval You might be Winter is a Good Time to Go Medieval
You might be bundled up at home trying to stay out of the cold and snow of winter, but that just means that it is a perfect time to explore history.
There are many great documentaries available on the on demand services that are great for playing in the background as you sew or craft.
There are great movies to watch that bring to mind the adventures of the past.
There are wonderful books to curl up with beside your mulled wine.
And there are stories and songs to remind you that keeping warm and gathering with friends is nothing new.
However you explore the past, we hope your winter is filled with medieval fun.
