Getting ready for Big Events Part 4 - The Drive Se Getting ready for Big Events Part 4 - The Drive
Several of us attend multiple larger SCA events each year, and I think we manage it pretty well, but that’s not on accident. There is experience, planning and knowledge that goes into that. And several of these points can be translated to newer members getting ready for events too.
So far in this series we talked about planning and packing, but getting to the event is a big part of it too. And history tells us it is also the most risky part of your adventure.
Once we have everything we need (or think we need) loaded up, it’s time to head out, or is it? Do some safety checks before you head out to avoid delays, damage to your vehicle or worse. Before you pack your vehicle (and maybe trailer) make sure it is road worthy. Are your tires aired up and in good condition? Have you greased your trailer bearings recently? Is your oil changed? fluids ok? do all of your lights work? When was the last time you checked your spare tire?
Once I get things loaded, is my vehicle safe to go down the road? vehicles are loaded by weight, not volume. You might have crammed everything in, but is it now dangerously overloaded? Can you see out of the windows and see out your mirrors?
Check that trailer. Loaded 60%/40% weight distribution? Towing chains connected, lights working, everything secure? Did you check any ratchet straps you used?
Another good habit to have is to check things when you stop, especially on the long drives to distant events. Re-check all of the straps, re check the trailer lights. Put your hand on your trailer wheel hubs and tires to see if they are overheating.
Then you have to remember to do it all over again on the drive home. We like having you around, we don’t want to lose you because of a silly accident on the drive back from an adventure.
Setting Your Difficulty Level When many people fi Setting Your Difficulty Level
When many people first begin in a skill or an area of interest, they can leave the setting of difficulty on the easy setting. You can learn about how to sew a tunic and leave off the embellishments, the embroidery, the decorations, and make an easy basic tunic. Just like the first time you play a video game you may want to have it on an easier setting so that you can learn the controls and the skills you will need within the game in order to enjoy it.
Later on you up the difficulty level to give yourself more of a challenge, so you can have more fun. And this is true with our example of the tunic as you add in more of the decorations more of the embroidery in the embellishments you up the difficulty level and so it can remain a challenge.
What we see in the SCA is that there are so many ways to add more challenges and more interests. After upping the difficulty level on the tunic you may soon find yourself wanting to add on the leather items that went along with the tunic, the belts and the shoes. Adding on the hat and then soon you are wanting to know what they were eating and you're suddenly cooking and learning about cooking pots and then making cooking pots and then learning about the hearth which could lead you to blacksmithing and and and . .
It’s ok to join us and start out on the easy setting. As long as you come out and start your adventure. Learn more about your SCA adventure by asking online or by contacting your local group

Smithville, MO June 9-18
We are all definitely getting excited for Lilies war. Lilies is a 10 day event held just north of Kansas City. It is one of the largest events of the year in the area and has many unique features.
There are classes on a wide variety of topics every day of the event, including the lampworking tent that features many of our artisans from Iowa. The classes feature information for all different knowledge and skill levels and there is always something new to learn.
There are many Archery and Thrown Weapons activities every day of the war, including assistance for beginners.
Fighting at the war includes rattan combat and steel combat.
There are many youth activities all week of the war.
There are also many other opportunities to learn at the informal social gatherings that happen through the war.
Lilies can be a challenge to attend if you are brand new to the SCA but it is also an easy drive into town for supplies and a great vacation on the lake. If you are new and want to talk about what it takes to be ready to attend an event like Lilies, just ask one of your local members or ask us on here.

Searching for Where You Belong Welcome! It's gre Searching for Where You Belong
Welcome! It's great that you found us. But one of the things that many people face when they are new to the Society for Creative Anachronism is finding out where they belong once they have found us.
This phrase can have a couple different meanings. One of which is what local group they belong to. There are several online resources to help you find your local SCA group so that you can begin participating in person and start having the historic amount of fun that we enjoy. You can find resources to discover your local group at SCAIowa.org as well as Calontir.org and SCA.org .
That may in fact be the easier part of discovering where you fit in in the SCA. After you find your local group you will likely begin searching for what activities you fit into, what social groups you fit into, what arts and science activities you fit into and which of these fit into your idea of fun. The search for what parts of the SCA you enjoy as well as what parts of the SCA make you feel fulfilled can take longer, but this is a search that is worth embarking on.
If you need some assistance on finding what you fit in to the larger picture of the SCA or simply when you fit in geographically among the local SCA groups feel free to reach out to us or even ask some of your SCA friends online

Attending a Local Meeting It is great that you fo Attending a Local Meeting
It is great that you found us, but the real fun starts happening when you experience the SCA in person. The place most people start is with attending a local meeting, but we know that going someplace new and talking to people you don’t know is a challenge for some people. So it might be worth spelling out the expectations if you choose to visit a local meeting.
So your step by step guide for attending a local meeting for the first time:
1. Show up.
2. Say ”Hi, I’m new”
3. ummmm . . nope, that is pretty much it. ok, that was easy.
And now your itemized list of requirements for attending a local SCA meeting
1. Show up - If you don’t show up to the meeting then you won’t be there.
2. ummmm .. nope, that’s about it. I think that is the complete list of requirements.
Many times people participating at local meetings will bring projects to work on and wear historic clothing to make the gathering more fun, but these are all optional. So if you have any questions about the step by step guide or the list of requirements, let us know. And if you need help finding your local meeting times or locations, please let us know.

Queens Prize April 29th, 2023 Pottorf Hall, 1710 Queens Prize
April 29th, 2023
Pottorf Hall, 1710 Avery Ave, Manhattan, KS 66503
Queen’s Prize is one of the big opportunities for the people in our Kingdom to show off the things they make and do. The easiest way to explain it to new members is that it is like an old style science fair where people can display and talk about their latest projects. This means people can walk around and talk to a variety of people working on different things. You can see what they are doing, learn about different areas of the Arts and Sciences being explored in the Kingdom and talk directly to the people doing the exploring.
You will see entries made by people of all ages and all skill levels. Some members of the SCA in Iowa will participate and take a drive down. Queens Prize is a great first event for new members who would like to learn about history by making and doing, but this year’s event may be a bit too much of a drive for many of our newer members.
This is a one day event. People show up in the morning and the participants will arrange their displays at tables. Other people will walk around and look at the displays and talk to the entrants about their projects. There may be meetings on various topics held throughout the day as well. This Queen’s Prize will also feature combat recreation and thrown weapon activities as well as a number of children’s activities
There is a lunch inn to provide a simple meal without leaving the site for $5. There will be a court in the late afternoon where announcements, awards and recognitions are presented. People generally leave after court and go out to eat with friends and drive home.
If you would like to learn more about attending Queens Prize, ask your local group members or contact us on here.

The Magic of Events: Gulf Wars 2023 at Night Even The Magic of Events: Gulf Wars 2023 at Night

Events in the Society for Creative Anachronism bring their own magic to those who enjoy attending. Even a brief day event can bring many moments of enjoyment for those who participate .
Members of the SCA find many advantages to the longer events which also include camping. Obviously there is more time to participate in activities and quite often it brings a wider variety of activities to participate in, but it also brings other chances to escape the real world for a while and experience moments of the past.
There are many chances to experience magical moments walking around SCA camping events. The ambiance created by the tents, by the activities, by the smell of the campfires and the light of the candles can bring about a magical feeling. A feeling of stepping back in time, making it easier to imagine the lives and experiences of those who lived long ago. For many members of the SCA the evenings bring a magic all their own.
You may have been running all day participating in a range of activities across the camp from fighting to archery, from cooking to learning. But the evening brings a time to enjoy the company of others. To sing around the campfire or to sit and talk by candlelight with friends that you have met that day.
We hope you enjoy our attempts to capture some of the magic of walking around Gulf Wars 2023 at night
