The Magic of Events: Gulf Wars 2023 at Night Even The Magic of Events: Gulf Wars 2023 at Night

Events in the Society for Creative Anachronism bring their own magic to those who enjoy attending. Even a brief day event can bring many moments of enjoyment for those who participate .
Members of the SCA find many advantages to the longer events which also include camping. Obviously there is more time to participate in activities and quite often it brings a wider variety of activities to participate in, but it also brings other chances to escape the real world for a while and experience moments of the past.
There are many chances to experience magical moments walking around SCA camping events. The ambiance created by the tents, by the activities, by the smell of the campfires and the light of the candles can bring about a magical feeling. A feeling of stepping back in time, making it easier to imagine the lives and experiences of those who lived long ago. For many members of the SCA the evenings bring a magic all their own.
You may have been running all day participating in a range of activities across the camp from fighting to archery, from cooking to learning. But the evening brings a time to enjoy the company of others. To sing around the campfire or to sit and talk by candlelight with friends that you have met that day.
We hope you enjoy our attempts to capture some of the magic of walking around Gulf Wars 2023 at night

Getting ready for Big Events Part 2 In the first Getting ready for Big Events Part 2
In the first part of the series on getting ready for attending big events I talked about how we looked at what we had, what we needed and what we wanted. In this part I was going to talk about planning in two parts, getting things done and money.
There is never enough time to get done all the things we want to get done. We have to draw the line somewhere or the stress of getting things done begins to erode at the fun we have actually having the adventures. That is one of the reasons we came up with those lists from part 1. I can plan to do some of the quick repairs and get those out of the way before some of the things I just want but don’t need. Maybe they are things I can bring with me to meetings and events to work on.
The needs I can add to a shopping list to start looking for. We know that many times we are limited on where we can find things in Iowa and we have to resort to looking online. But if I arm myself with my shopping list of needs, I can be on the lookout for those things when I find them.
I can also plan out a reasonable budget and set limits on how much I spend. I can’t afford all of the things I want to have, but I can budget for the needs and find some workarounds when I can. Setting a household budget isn’t always a super fun adult activity, but any SCA fun shouldn’t come at the expense of paying critical bills at home. By having a budget you can figure out how many and what events are realistic, as well as what supplies you can get when.
I can take a calendar, online or a physical one, and set some deadlines. I can set the deadlines so that the things I really need to have are done well before the event, leaving me time for unforeseen things and time to pack.
I plan on the money for the wants if I have the extra cash, and I plan on the time to do it if I have the things I need done. If I have a plan, especially for some people if it is written down, I can see my progress.
If you need help planning for your next big SCA Adventure, ask one of your local SCA members for help or ask on here for more suggestions.
Spring Coronation – Saturday April 8th 2023 9 Spring Coronation –
Saturday April 8th 2023
9209 E 29th St. N Wichita, KS 67226

Coronations are held twice each year, and these are the events where the current royalty step down and the current prince(s) and/or princess(es) are crowned to become the new royalty to serve for six months. This coronation is a pretty long drive for most of our members around Iowa and so many members in Iowa might sit this one out unless they are directly related to the activities or really enjoy the drive to Wichita.
These events tend to be grand shows of ceremony and display. People will commonly wear their nicer historic costumes and bring items of heraldic display.
This is a single day event where people arrive in the morning, attend the morning court, talk to people during the day, watch some of the fighting, attend afternoon court and then leave site in the late afternoon.
The site opens at 8 AM and closes at 7PM
No alcoholic beverages are allowed at this site. A lunch “Inn” or “Tavern” is available so you don’t have to leave site to find food and this is by donation. There is an evening feast planned but it is limited to the first 50 people to sign up. This multi-course meal to celebrate the days festivities is $15
Cost of the event is $20 for non-members and $15 for members. Youth 5-17 are $5 and 4 and under are free.
The address for the event is 9209 E 29th St. N Wichita, KS 67226

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask us and we can try to find you the information you need.
Where do you buy those Clothes? There aren’t ma Where do you buy those Clothes?
There aren’t many requirements for people to participate in the SCA, but there is one perceived stumbling block to many of our new members. Where do we get all those clothes?
There are several answers that we can tell you about. But first, some of the people you see at events have been working on their wardrobes for 20, 30, 40, even 50 years. No one expects any of our new members to have a perfect and amazing wardrobe on day 1. All you need is an attempt at historic clothing to start your adventure.
When people start they often borrow something to get through the first couple events. Some people borrow stuff from their groups, some from people they meet.
Some people start with costumes that they had for a visit to a Ren Fair, LARP activities or just what they have if they can make it look like something pre-1600CE.
Some people get their historic clothing by making it themselves. For decades many people in the SCA have started with a generic “SCA 2 seam T tunic” or “T tunic dress.” They aren’t perfect, but they can be done with as little as two seams and in just a few minutes.
There are many garments based more on actual history than the “SCA 2 seam T Tunic” and many of these are just as easy or only a little harder, but are based in reality.
More recently more members have been relying on vendors online who cater to the reenactment community to buy something to get started with. We can help you find places that sell items close to historically accurate and fairly priced clothing options.
There are many other things people make as well. Some people come to us with quite extensive costuming experience and all they need is some help with the names of different garments and finding the patterns.
So you may have something that works, you can make or borrow things or you can buy something. Whatever path you need to take, local SCA members can help you.
Welcome to the new people We have had several more Welcome to the new people
We have had several more people find us in the last few weeks on SCAIowa. Remember that this is an unofficial group that is dedicated to introducing new people to the Society for Creative Anachronism across Iowa and beyond. We reach across the local group boundaries to help provide information to new and potential members on their first few steps in the SCA..
If you have found us on here then feel free to look at some of the past posts or even ask any questions you may have yourself.
Feel free to check out our introductory series of videos discussing a new member’s first steps when joining the SCA found on our website www.SCAIowa.org
You will see posts related to upcoming events, information about the different ways people participate as well as the different things people participate in. You will see advice about how to start and keep having fun in our hobby.
After you join SCAIowa, you should look into joining your local SCA group online as well. The local groups are more dedicated to the everyday running of the local groups rather than just the issues and questions related to newcomers to our hobby. You can still ask questions on the local groups and start making connections with other participants in your area. A list of the local groups in Iowa can be easily found on our website.
The SCAIowa resources should be more of a temporary stop along your path of adventure through the SCA. A place to find your footing and the initial direction you want to explore. Your adventure lies in all the activities at events and the people you will meet, not on our introductory resources.
If you are an experienced member, you are welcome too, however remember our focus is on the newcomers and information important to people joining today’s SCA.
What to know before deciding to go to Lilies War What to know before deciding to go to Lilies War
Lilies War is going to be held June 9th-18th just north of Kansas City Mo. It is our Kingdom’s largest event and our Kingdom’s longest camping event. It takes some time to get yourself ready for Lilies, so here are a few things to keep in mind, as these variables drastically affect how easy it will be for you to get ready to attend the War.
Lilies is 10 days long, but you don’t have to attend all 10 days. Do you have enough garb for 10 days? Or 5 days if you run into town and do laundry?
Lilies is often Hot. Do you have cool garb to wear?
It can get windy and there are often storms. Can your tent handle it? Many people start with modern tents, but the tiny push-pin tent stakes they sell with modern tents won’t cut it.
The site is primitive. There aren’t outlets around site, the showers can get cold once in a while, and there are port-o-potties. But those minor inconveniences don’t stop the fun from happening.
There are some food vendors on site and there are large stores only a short drive away. You may need to make a plan to cook some food.
If you are ready for some of the inconveniences and work involved with attending the event, Lilies will pay off your hard work with day after day of archery, classes, dancing, fighting, friendship and fun.
Talk to your local SCA members about what they do to get ready for Lilies or ask on here and we can answer your questions. Little projects that you can work on right now can get you ready for a lot of fun later.

SCAIowa - Introduction to the SCA Videos for New m SCAIowa - Introduction to the SCA Videos for New members post 2 21 2023
The new videos are available on - www.scaiowa.org
For the last several years we were offering a virtual newcomer class once a month. In this class included a range of topics to introduce the SCA to new and potential members across Iowa and beyond.
To make this information more accessible we have been working on recording the presentations in bite-sized bite sized segments as well as adding additional content like - How to Find Your Local Group, How to Sign In at Events, How to understand an Event Flier and Kingdom Calendar, and more information for helping those just starting in the SCA with advice on clothing, camping and more.
We aren’t done with the videos and web content yet, but a lot of progress has been made and you can access them now at the SCAIowa website at www.SCAIowa.org
Improving Over Time: Adding Shoes It is often sai Improving Over Time: Adding Shoes
It is often said that the accessories make the outfit. The same is true for the attempts at historical clothing that members of the SCA wear at events as well. Our new members often find that they need to add accessories to their outfits piece by piece, as their time, money, and skill allow. We all know this and we don’t expect people to walk in the first day with everything perfect and complete.
Shoes are one of those problematic items for people to acquire. There are some shoe styles that people can still buy today and they fit in for the most part. Many of the roman style sandals can be found in spring. These fashions still echo to this day. Other styles are harder to find in modern stores.
There are vendors who sell quality reproductions of functional footwear. Often this is somewhat cost prohibitive to someone just starting out. Prices of $80+ for basic shoes are not uncommon. This is still an option many people take.
Another option is to make shoes yourself. If you are someone who enjoys making things out of leather, this can be easier than you think. There are often classes at events or handouts and videos available online to help you in this process. Other people do not enjoy the process of making shoes, so they avoid it.
I would say the majority of our new members find unobtrusive brown or black shoes that work for the time being and wear them until a better option comes along. You can also avoid the white trainers or other bright colors to help blend in.
In the end, we would rather have you at an event in your running shoes than not have you there at all. So make an attempt at pre-1600CE clothing and come have some historical fun.

Getting ready for Big Events Part 1 - Needs Assess Getting ready for Big Events Part 1 - Needs Assessment
Several of us attend multiple larger SCA events each year, and I think we manage it pretty well, but that’s not an accident. There is experience, planning and knowledge that goes into that.
planning ahead is why we can do what we do and why it isn’t as much stress, so we can enjoy ourselves more. The first step in this planning is actually a review of what we have, need and want.
One of the things we did was to lay out all of our historic clothing. see what needed repaired, what wasn’t usable and what was ok. We made a list and wrote all of it down. We know how long each event is and that tells us roughly how many changes of clothes we need. We also know the likely weather we face. So does what we have match what we need? That tells us the more urgent projects for clothing. But this works for our cooking gear and tent and other things too.
Then there are things we want. It would be nice to have them, but they aren’t critical. The pretty things, the challenging things.
Why so early? Time to source supplies, time to budget, time to plan. We will source the materials for the needs and the wants, but get the needs done first. Then we will see if we have time to get some of the wants done.
What does this look like for the new member? You likely don’t have piles of camping gear and historic clothing, but what resources can you borrow from the group? What do you really need to get started? Often it isn’t as much as you think, especially when even the long events have towns close by where you can launder clothing and buy supplies.
You don’t Have to have all the things to start on your adventure. Look at what you have, what you need and get adventuring. Ask your local SCA group members for help or more information on how you can start your SCA adventure. #SCAIowa #AxedRoot #Calontir #Calontir_Official #MedievalIowa
