Where do you buy those Clothes? There aren’t a Where do you buy those Clothes?
There aren’t a lot of requirements for people to participate in the SCA, but there is one that is perceived as a stumbling block to many of our new members. Where do we get all those clothes? There are several answers that we can tell you about. Some of the people you see at events have been working on their wardrobes for 20, 30, 40, even 50 years. No one expects any of our new members to have a perfect and amazing wardrobe on day 1. All you need is an attempt at historic clothing.
When people start they often borrow a tunic or dress to get through the first couple events. Some people borrow stuff from the groups, some from people they meet.
Some people start with costumes that they had for a visit to a Ren Fair, LARP activities or just what they have.
Some people get their historic clothing by making it themselves. For decades many people in the SCA have started with a generic “T tunic” or “T tunic dress.” They aren’t perfect, they don’t always fit great, but they can be done with as little as two seams and in just a few minutes. The instructions can be found on line and we can direct you to them.
There are other things people make as well. Some people come to us with quite extensive costuming experience and all they need is some help with the names of different garments and finding the patterns. We can help with that too. There are now many tutorials online to help people make historic clothing as well.
Once they are playing a while, some people who don’t know how to or don’t want to learn how to sew look for other options (but we do teach people how to sew too . . ) One way they get historic clothing is to buy some from vendors. We can help you find places that sell historically accurate and fairly priced clothing options. (Beware the unscrupulous and questionable vendors. Some are good - some are not.)

So you may have something that works, you can make or borrow things or you can buy somethin. Whatever path you need to take, local SCA members can help you.
Useful websites: fabrics-store.com There are sever Useful websites: fabrics-store.com
There are several sources of good quality fabric online. One online retailer that many of the SCA members we know have come to use and trust is Fabrics-store.com. They have a wide selection of colors and fairly reasonable and stable prices. Their quality is of a predictable level and their shipping is fast and fairly reasonable. The LIO19 weight linen is fairly standard among many of the people making clothing in the SCA for moderate to warm events. They do run frequent sales, like many fabric retail outlets, so you can try to watch for better prices. You can find cheaper prices on different websites, but Fabric Store is a reliable point of comparison.

Getting Started with Embroidery Embroidery is one Getting Started with Embroidery
Embroidery is one of those creative techniques that has stood the test of time. There are examples of embroidery used to decorate items or garments that have survived for many centuries and even today modern embroiderers enjoy this decorative hobby. Embroidery is one of those very portable and extremely accessible hobbies that members of the Society for Creative Anachronism explore as they attempt to recreate the artistic creations of the past.
Fortunately the tools for recreating historic embroidery closely parallel the tools used by modern embroiderers in their hobby. So getting started with embroidery within the SCA can be as easy as buying modern embroidery tools. Many people start with modern embroidery hoops and skeins of embroidery floss found in many crafting and retail stores. The choice of the material someone is embroidering upon may be different as many times in the SCA people are applying embroidered decorations to garments constructed out of wool and linen.
If you would like to learn more about how members of the SCA explore embroidery or other fiber arts activities, inquire online or ask members of your local SCA group at a meeting

Low Stress History Show: The Dig and The Reality Low Stress History Show: The Dig and The Reality
This Is a new drama and it is a fun and low stress show to pull up and watch as you craft or chill. But of course they did have to make it a little more dramatic . . so it is also useful to look at the reality. Since the drama leaves out much of the information about the finds themselves. To provide a little more background you may want to check out this short documentary about the finds of Sutton Hoo

The Calontir Award System: Eo-Fyrd In the SCA the The Calontir Award System: Eo-Fyrd
In the SCA there is a system for recognizing the accomplishments and contributions of the membership. This three tiered system has awards and symbols that go along with it. Each kingdom has their own names and symbols for these awards, and they are given out by the royalty in courts.
The awards for the people who participate in equestrian activities are marshal awards and the first level is that of Eo Fyrd. The Eo Fyrd is an “Award of Arms” level recognition and the recipients of “AOA” awards can use the title of Lord or Lady. The recipients of the award often display an award Cross of Calatrava on white wedge pointing down and Bits.
At this point the people receiving this award have shown that they enjoy participating in the equestrian program and sharing this enjoyment with others.
One of the key points to remember is that we do things for the enjoyment of doing them and helping to contribute, and not because of the chance to win an award or for a shiny medallion.
If you would like to learn more about the equestrian activities explored in the SCA or how to get started, ask on here or at a local meeting.
