Kingdom Arts and Sciences 2023 Saturday Nov 4th, 2 Kingdom Arts and Sciences 2023
Saturday Nov 4th, 2023 Auburn, KS
Kingdom Arts and Sciences is one of the two big Arts and Science based kingdom events held each year. The format is much like that of a school science fair, where entrant’s bring displays of their projects to show and talk about. These make for excellent events to check out all of the different things that people are working on around the Kingdom. Those entering a project can receive feedback and be judged on their project if they want.
Usually there is also an A&S championship competition held at this event to determine the A&S kingdom champion.
This is a single day event where people arrive in the morning, look at the displays and talk to people during the day. You can walk around and learn about what people have worked on and see if you are interested in trying it. A simple lunch is available and is included in the site fee. Most people attend court in the afternoon where recognitions are announced and announcements are made. People then leave site in the late afternoon and find a place for dinner.
Event Registration is Adult $20, Adult Member $15, Youth 6-18 $5, Children under 6 – free. The site opens at 8 AM and closes at 8 PM

SCA Names – Choosing your SCA Name Most people SCA Names – Choosing your SCA Name
Most people participating in the SCA choose a second SCA name to use at events and when talking to their SCA friends. You too can choose an SCA name if you wish and register it with the SCA.
There are many ways to go about creating your SCA name. Some people use the inspiration that comes from a specific culture. They might be interested in Viking cultures or old English. They might be inspired by classic tales of knightly virtue or great adventures. They might be drawn to the descriptive names that tell people where you are from or what you do for a living. You might have family connections that you wish to explore, connections to locations or to ancestors.
If you have an inspiration, then you can take it to one of the consulting heralds who can help you find where it came from, how it was spelled, where it was used. They can also help you with the paperwork that it used to register your name with the SCA
You are not required to register your name through the SCA, but for a small fee you can do so. If you have any questions about registering your name you can ask us or as any of your local heralds.
The Spectrum of Persona Play The development of a The Spectrum of Persona Play
The development of a persona within the SCA is one of those optional aspects of the society that some people gain a lot of enjoyment out of. When I talk to people about persona play I prefer to refer to it as finding your space on a spectrum of activity, as people really do play at a variety of intensities when it comes to developing a persona.
At one end of this spectrum, which again is a perfectly fine and valid way to participate, is just picking a SCA name and dressing up as generically medieval. There are many people whose interests lie in specific activities or crafts who would not then spend as much time on developing a persona. They are pursuing other interests rather than creating all the clothing and accessories that go along with a persona and researching those aspects of personal history tied to that specific culture and time period.
At the other end of persona play would be what is often called ‘high persona.’ It is a well-developed and thoroughly researched persona. These people enjoy learning exactly how they would have lived stretching back into history. They know how they would have walked, how they would have talked, what they would eat for breakfast, exactly what they would have worn, who they would have interacted with, who their parents were, what their children would be doing and many of the specific historical events that they would have witnessed.
You can see how this can represent a broad spectrum of activity and how there are many degrees of variation between one end and the other. Remember that developing a fully fleshed out persona is an optional way to play and if it does not interest you, you are not required to participate in that way.
If you would like to learn more about developing a persona or just participating as someone who is generically medieval exploring the aspects of the entire range of history and cultures then feel free to ask your local members of the SCA or ask online.

Friday, Oct. 13 - Sunday, Oct. 15, 2023
There are a number of events held throughout the year focusing on specific activities. These events allow participants opportunities to enjoy all of the aspects of one area of the hobby. Autumn arrows is an event allowing members to enjoy a number of activities related to archery and thrown weapons.
Although this event can be a bit of a drive for many of the members in Iowa groups, this fall event held in Missouri often sees pleasant fall weather perfect for camping and the outdoor activities held that weekend.
This is one of the three-day camping style events where some members may choose to day trip and participate in activities held on Saturday or others show up to enjoy the atmosphere in camaraderie of camping. For those wishing to camp it is normal to show up on Friday evening after the site opens at 5:00, to set up their tent and, together with friends, enjoy the evening's festivities.
Getting up on Saturday they can enjoy the full range of activities offered at the event which could easily occupy someone all day long. Into the evening members can enjoy talking to friends about the day's activities or other aspects of the hobby in the relaxed SCA camping atmosphere. On Sunday people tend to get up to pack up their tents and leave by the close of the event at noon.

Feasts are multi-course meals where we try to recreate the atmosphere of the feast hall as well as enjoying a meal with friends. Fall Coronation – Saturday, October 7, 2023 Mil Fall Coronation –
Saturday, October 7, 2023
Mills County Fairgrounds
61317 315th Street in Malvern, IA
Part of the fun of the Society for Creative Anachronism is recreating the spectacle and function of royalty. Coronations are held twice each year. These are the events where the current royalty step down and the current prince(s) and/or princess(es) are crowned to become the new royalty to serve for six months. This coronation is a pretty easy drive for many of our SCA Iowa members in central, western and southern Iowa.
These events tend to be grand shows of ceremony and display. People will commonly wear their nicer historic clothing and bring items of heraldic display.
This is a single day event where people arrive in the morning, attend the morning court, take classes, look at the displays or just talk to people during the day, attend afternoon court and then leave site in the late afternoon. For those who wish to learn more about the pageantry of the SCA or those who enjoy watching the show, this is a great event to check out.
The site opens at 9 AM and closes at 9PM with many of the attendees enjoying an evening feast and those not staying may enjoy a meal at some of the great dining options across Omaha.
There are no outside alcoholic beverages allowed at this site. There is a lunch inn providing some simple lunch options on site.
There is a feast with a limited number of seats. The cost is $15 and it promises to sell out early.
Cost of the event is $25 for non-members and $20 for members. Youth 10-18 are $10 and under 10 are free.

Meeting or Event? In the Society for Creative Ana Meeting or Event?
In the Society for Creative Anachronism we use words many times without being sure they mean the same thing to everyone in the conversation. A couple of these are Meeting and Event.
A Meeting is a gathering of the locally active members of the SCA. It may be held weekly, biweekly, monthly, or scheduled further out. Meetings are usually held in the evenings during the week but some groups have them on weekends.
Meetings have no fee to attend
Meetings don’t have a requirement of historic clothing, but you can wear it if you like.
Meetings may include crafting or sewing nights, business meetings or general hanging out as well as Fighter practices or archery practices.
Event is the term we usually use for our weekend gatherings that are held around the region and across the country. They are scheduled and planned out far in advance and can be found on the Kingdom Calendar. (www.calontir.org)
Events have a fee you have to pay in order to attend - this helps to pay for the rental of the space.
Events require participants to wear an “attempt” at pre-1600’s clothing
Events may have specific topics or may include a combination of many different activities.
Events usually draw in participants from much further away than just the local group
Contact your local group to find out more about their local meeting schedule and check out the Kingdom Calendar for more information about upcoming events.
